چکیده

Article history: Received 24 December 2010 Received in revised form 12 July 2011 Accepted 26 August 2011 Available online xxxx It has been a decade since some of the early papers on dual-polarization radar based hydrometeor classification were published. Subsequently this topic has seen rapid advances especially due to adaptation of this technology for operational applications. Since the early papers on hydrometeor classification, additional characterization in terms of echo classification, data quality and hydrometeor identification have been researched, and products produced some distinctly, some with all three procedures combined. This paper provides a summary of the advances since the early papers in this area, especially with an emphasis on how the successful operational applications have influenced this field. Principles of the various types of classification and examples of characterizations such as data quality, echo and hydrometeor classification are also described. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Dual-polarization C-band weather radar algorithms for rain rate estimation and hydrometeor classification in an alpine region

Dual polarization is becoming the standard for new weather radar systems. In contrast to conventional weather radars, where the reflectivity is measured in one polarization plane only, a dual polarization radar provides transmission in either horizontal, vertical, or both polarizations while receiving both the horizontal and vertical channels simultaneously. Since hydrometeors are often far fro...

Differential power calibration for weather radar

Dual polarized weather radars, radars that can transmit both horizontal (H) and vertical (V) polarized waves, are becoming more common in the world. Dual polarization is accomplished via fast alternate transmission of H and V polarization or simultaneous H and V polarization transmission. The simultaneous H and V transmit mode is becoming quite popular since a high power, costly, polarization s...

On the Equivalence of Dual-Wavelength and Dual-Polarization Equations for Estimation of the Raindrop Size Distribution

For airand spaceborne weather radars, which typically operate at frequencies of 10 GHz and above, attenuation correction is usually an essential part of any rain estimation procedure. For ground-based radars, where the maximum range within the precipitation is usually much greater than that from airor spaceborne radars, attenuation correction becomes increasingly important at frequencies above ...

Cloud Microphysics Retrieval Using S-Band Dual-Polarization Radar Measurements

The recent deployment of multiparameter, polarimetric radars provides the impetus for development of microphysical retrievals. The primary objective of this paper is to describe a particle classification technique that makes use of polarimetric radar observations. The particle classification technique is computationally simple enough to be implemented for real-time research and operational fiel...

Fully Polarimetric Analysis of Weather Radar Signatures Vollpolarimetrische Analyse von Wetterradar-Signaturen

The present doctoral thesis deals with radar polarimetry, namely with the investigation of properties of polarimetric variables potentially useful in radar meteorology. For use with dual-polarization radars, the degree of polarization is analyzed. This variable is available to planned operational radars. The degree of polarization is dependent on transmit polarization state and, consequently, i...
